Day 2-Tour of London and Performance

We had a great day learning more about London during our bus tour today. Here are a few fun facts from our tour:

West London=Rich London (winds blow west to east so all winds blow smells to east London) London was built primarily between 1800-1899 very Victorian

When Hitler was thinking of invading Britain the Whitely's store where we ate dinner last night was going to be the headquarters of the Nazi party.

Kensington gardens in Hyde park is the same size as Monaco and was originally owned by Westminster. It opened to the public in the 17th century. You can ride a horse in Hyde park and there is a pet cemetery in Hyde park-burial ground for beloved pets of the wealthy of the 1800's

Garden at Buckingham palace is over 40 acres. 1837 fist year as royal residence.

Westminster Abby is the Protestant Church-1066 Christmas Day William the conqueror first royal to be crowned here. Chaucer buried here because of his work as a clerk of works not for his work in literature!

Westminster Cathedral was opened in 1903 and is the Catholic center of worship.

City of London has two cities -London and Westminster-all make up city of greater London. Each has a mayor.

There is a War memorial for the women of World War II

The reason there are so many banks in London is because it is in the middle of the time zones.

Cab drivers here have extensive testing to go through before being licensed as a cab driver. It can take over 3 years to become licensed.

In 196 AD a wall was built by the Romans-parts are still in existence throughout London

Christ church was bombed during WWII and there is now a garden within the remaining walls

We finished our evening with a visit to the outskirts of London where we had a performance with the Bromley Youth Concert Band. It was great fun to visit with the British students over dinner before sharing a performance with the other students.

Have a great evening!
